PROCLAMATION
   

THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING AUGUST 31, 2009 AS

 

FRANCIS “BUTCH” TAYLOR DAY

IN CELEBRATION OF HIS 100TH BIRTHDAY

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, for more than 70 years, FRANCIS “BUTCH” TAYLOR has dedicated his life to public service at home and abroad, offering aid, comfort, and hope to those in need; and

   

WHEREAS, after receiving his Masters Degree in Social Welfare from UC Berkeley in 1936, Butch held positions with the California State Relief Administration and the Alameda County Charities Commission and, in 1941, joined the American Red Cross as Assistant Field Director at the Presidio in San Francisco, where he was instrumental in the first-time hiring of women to serve as Field Directors and Assistant Field Directors; and

   

WHEREAS, in 1943, Butch took on the challenge of serving as a Field Director for the Red Cross Services to the Armed Forces in China, India, and Burma, providing assistance to servicemen on overseas assignments, and spent two rewarding years away from his wife, Betty Lou, and their new baby daughter, Carol, in Redwood City; and

   

WHEREAS, upon his return to the States in 1945, Butch became Information Consultant at the Community Chest, now known as the United Way, and then resumed his career path with the American Red Cross in 1947 as Manager of the San Mateo County Chapter in Burlingame; and

   

WHEREAS, upon retiring from the Red Cross in 1974, Butch went on to serve as Associate Director of the Alcoholism Council of California and, during the next five years, also represented AARP to promote the importance of retirement planning to budding young companies in Silicon Valley, and was sent on a number of FEMA assignments to offshore disaster sites such as Guam, Samoa, and the Marshall Islands, and to mainland locations including Florida, Alabama, Texas, and the Navajo and Hopi reservations in Arizona.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates August 31, 2009, as FRANCIS “BUTCH” TAYLOR DAY in recognition of his milestone 100th Birthday and his lifetime of outstanding public service. The Board extends its best wishes to FRANCIS “BUTCH” TAYLOR and his family for a joyous celebration.
