RECOMMENDATION:
|
Honor Girley Macaraeg as Employee of the Month for September 2009 and authorize the President of the Board to sign the commendation.
|
|
|
BACKGROUND:
|
The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.
|
|
|
Our Employee of the Month for September 2009 is Girley Macaraeg, a Charge Nurse in the San Mateo Medical Center, Health System.
|
|
|
DISCUSSION:
|
Girley Macaraeg has been employed with San Mateo County for over 22 years. Girley works as a Charge Nurse in the Daly City clinic where she demonstrates an outstanding level of performance and serves as a role model. She is well respected by staff, peers, providers and patients. The clinic frequently receives compliments about her managerial skills and work ethic.

Girley has been especially effective in counseling and team building. She has assisted staff with expanding their roles while practicing within their scope of service and frequently steps in to assist staff with patient care duties. Girley is proactive and creative with effort to increase volumes and maximize reimbursement and meaningfully involves her staff in planning, problem solving, goal development, and continuous improvement activities.

The San Mateo Medical Center celebrated Hospital Week and Nurses Week in May. One of the most successful parts of this celebration was the employee recognition. Employees wrote comments about their colleagues, and no employee had more laudatory comments than Girley. Her name literally rose among the top, as she was nominated by several of her peers for recognition during Nurses Week. Some of the comments received were as follows:
• “Girley not only performs the every day tasks dutifully and reliably, she proactively works to improve clinic operations, staff relations, and the level of care we deliver to our complex and demanding patient population”.
• “Girley is the most amazing Charge Nurse ever! She is very flexible and mindful of the needs of the nurses. She’s a great team player – compassionate, caring and always goes the extra mile for the patients.”

Approval of the Employee of the Month contributes to the Shared Vision 2025 outcome of Prosperous Community by recognizing employees that foster innovation and excellence in the services provided.
Our County is fortunate to have Girley Macaraeg as one of its outstanding employees.
