THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

PROCLAMING OCTOBER 2009 AS

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

AWARENESS MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between 15-44 years of age, and 25 percent of women and nearly 10 percent of men experience domestic violence during their lifetime; and

   

WHEREAS, domestic violence results in over 2,000 related 911 calls to law enforcement agencies in San Mateo County annually; and

   

WHEREAS, between July 2008 and June 2009 in San Mateo County, 141 women and children were provided emergency shelter and transitional housing to escape abusers, and over 1,120 survivors of domestic violence received counseling in order to heal and build a violence-free life; and

   

WHEREAS, experts estimate that, in the United States, the direct costs for medical and mental health care related to domestic violence are $4.1 billion annually, and domestic violence is estimated to cause a loss of $900 million in lost days of work each year for its victims; and

   

WHEREAS, San Mateo County is committed to eliminating all forms of family abuse and violence.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, proclaims the month of October 2009 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, to raise awareness and to encourage all citizens of San Mateo County to rid our community of domestic violence.
