THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

JAN EPSTEIN

***************************************

 

WHEREAS, JAN EPSTEIN began her long career of public service to San Mateo County as a medical/surgical nurse and then a public health nurse in Redwood City and East Palo Alto, serving the community through compassionate care; and

 
     
 

WHEREAS, JAN EPSTEIN continued the tradition of service later as a preschool teacher for ten years with a passion for early childhood education; and

 
     
 

WHEREAS, JAN EPSTEIN first participated in government and the political process through service to the San Mateo County Democratic Party as Secretary and later Chair for twelve years, exhibiting her knack for leading in the political arena; and

 
 

 
 

WHEREAS, JAN EPSTEIN was elected to the San Mateo City Council in 1997, serving her first term as Mayor beginning in December 1999 and elected again to serve as Mayor in December 2004, ultimately serving three full terms in the City Council; and

 
     
 

WHEREAS, JAN EPSTEIN dedicated her political experience and love for the City of San Mateo through her active involvement and leadership in the Yes on Measure C campaign, which passed bonds to finance much-needed police and fire department building upgrades, and her dedication to the New Library bond campaign, which allowed for the building of the New Main Library; and

 
     
 

WHEREAS, JAN EPSTEIN has consistently exhibited tremendous leadership, reflecting the highest ideal of community service, throughout her career in standing up for children, families, seniors, the working poor and disabled, and tirelessly working for affordable housing and a thriving downtown in the City of San Mateo;

 
     
 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby commends JAN EPSTEIN for her many years of leadership and community service to the city of San Mateo.
