RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING AND COMMENDING

The San Mateo County

Tobacco Education Coalition

Upon Its

20th Anniversary

WHEREAS, since 1988, the San Mateo County Tobacco Education Coalition has developed and implemented comprehensive tobacco education and prevention plans, including hundreds of hours of yearly support for youth and community groups, public officials, schools, law enforcement and health care providers; and

   

WHEREAS, according to the California Department of Public Health, the two decades of work by TEC and other similar groups have helped save more than a million Californians and approximately $86 billion in health care costs; and

   

WHEREAS, tobacco use is the No. 1 cause of death and disease in San Mateo County, responsible for 1 in 5 deaths each year and a leading contributor to heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and most cancers; and

   

WHEREAS, TEC remains a leading advocate for anti-tobacco policies, including smoke-free restaurants and bars, smoke-free parks and public events and smoke-free housing; slashing countywide smoking rates by nearly half in 20 years; and

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates and commends the San Mateo County Tobacco Education Coalition upon the celebration of its 20th anniversary. The Board herby expresses its gratitude to all members of the coalition and extends sincere wishes for continued success and excellence.
