THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

DESIGNATING DECEMBER 1, 2009 AS

WORLD AIDS DAY

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, December 1, 2009, marks the 21st annual observance of World AIDS Day with this year’s theme of “Universal Access & Human Rights”; and

   

WHEREAS, AIDS has killed more than 25 million people worldwide between 1981 and 2007, and an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide live with HIV as of 2007, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history; and

   

WHEREAS, as of December 31, 2008, San Mateo County has documented 2,171 AIDS cases and 1,152 persons living with HIV/AIDS within our County; and

   

WHEREAS, African Americans make up about 3% of the county’s population, comprise 17% of all living HIV/AIDS cases diagnosed, and continue to have the highest incidence of infection in San Mateo County; and

 

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County STD/HIV Program continues to expand its reach into the Asian and Pacific Islander communities, and other emerging communities at risk for and living with HIV/AIDS; and

 

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County STD/HIV Program recognizes and values the collaborative efforts of its community-based partners, faith-based leaders, and community advocates in delivering effective HIV/AIDS prevention information and compassionate care services to community members at risk of infection with and affected by HIV/AIDS; and

   

WHEREAS, the County of San Mateo, along with other entities around the world, is holding events on December 1st to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and the necessity of prevention, early detection and treatment for all people, regardless of economic status, sexual orientation, race and nationality.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the

County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby recognizes and commemorates December 1, 2009 as World AIDS Day and continues its commitment to expanded access to targeted prevention and specialized medical/social services to reduce the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS in our community.
