SUBJECT:

Appointments to the 2010 Charter Review Committee

RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a resolution appointing members to the 2010 Charter Review Committee.

BACKGROUND:

On November 10, 2009, this Board convened the 2010 Charter Review Committee to review the San Mateo County Charter and to submit to the Board, no later than June 30, 2010, its recommendations regarding amendments to the Charter.

The Board determined that the 2010 Charter Review Committee shall have 17 members to be selected as follows: (1) each member of the Board shall appoint two residents from his or her Supervisorial District; and (2) one person shall be designated by each of the following seven organizations for appointment to the Committee by the Board of Supervisors: the Council of Cities, County School Boards Association, League of Women Voters, Central Labor Council, SamCEDA, Sustainable San Mateo County, and Youth Commission.

DISCUSSION:

Board President Mark Church invited the seven organizations listed above to designate an individual to serve on the 2010 Charter Review Committee. In addition, each member of the Board will designate two residents from his or her District. Today, the Board will appoint the 17 individuals.

An organizational meeting for the Committee has been set for January 13, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. It is open to the public and will be held in Room 101, 455 County Center, in Redwood City.

This action contributes to the Shared Vision 2025 outcome of collaborative community by engaging community participation in the appointment process.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The convening of a Charter review committee will result in only incidental impact to the General Fund relating to the staffing of the committee.
