PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING JANUARY 26, 2010 AS | ||||
DR. DAISAKU IKEDA, AMBASSADOR OF PEACE AND SEEDS OF CHANGE DAY | ||||

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that | ||||
WHEREAS, from January 10 to February 6, 2010, the SGI-USA is sponsoring the exhibition, Seeds of Change, The Earth Charter & Human Potential, in partnership with the Department of Theatre and Dance and the Dorothy Stang Center for Social Justice and Community Engagement, in the Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Library at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the exhibit Seeds of Change created by the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) and the Earth Charter Initiative was first shown at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannnesburg 2002 and supports the United Nations “Decade of Education for Sustainable Development” and the ethical principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21st Century outlined in the Earth Charter; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Dr. Daisaku Ikeda in 1960 organized the American Branch of the Soka Gakkai, a lay organization of Nichiren Buddhists and on January 26, 1975 established the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), which is an international network of 12 million members in 192 countries and territories worldwide; and | ||||
WHEREAS, members of the SGI-USA are dedicated to supporting all people throughout the community through the life-affirming philosophy and principles of Nichiren Buddhism which recognizes the dignity and unlimited potential within every human being to create the most authentically happy and contributive life possible; and | ||||
WHEREAS, SGI President Dr. Daisaku Ikeda through establishment of the Soka educational system has encouraged youth to live to their limitless potential as global citizens and to contribute to the prosperity of their communities, the protection of the environment and a peaceful society, and founded Soka University of America in Aliso Viejo, California, | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates January 26, 2010 as Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, Ambassador of Peace and Seeds of Change Day, in recognition of the many important contributions of Dr. Daisaku Ikeda and the Soka Gakkai International, represented by the Seeds of Change Exhibition and local SGI members who in solidarity with their mentor, vow to live with reverence for life and the profound interconnection to all life on the planet. | ||||
