THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING JANUARY 2010 AS

NATIONAL MENTORING

MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, since 2002, the month of January has been set aside to focus attention nationally on the vital role that mentors play in the lives of countless youth, young adults and their families; and

   

WHEREAS, in San Mateo County, hundreds of young people benefit daily from the guidance and support of a tireless adult, who provides a certain level of intangibles that create hope, self-worth and dignity; and

   

WHEREAS, in San Mateo County, thousands of young people await their chance to be matched with a mentor, who will help motivate them to see and to reach beyond themselves for a brighter future; and

   

WHEREAS, since 2004, the Mentoring Coalition of San Mateo County has consolidated the energies and resources of twenty-nine organizations and have annually matched almost 1,000 dedicated mentors with more than 1,500 clients countywide; and

 

WHEREAS, the tremendously positive impact that mentors have on the overall community is proven and undeniable, and the need for adult mentors of all age groups is continuous because the influence of a role model lasts a lifetime.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates January 2010 as National Mentoring Month, and the Board further recognizes the critical importance of mentors in helping to ensure the future viability of the Peninsula.
