SUBJECT:

Agreement with The Regents of the University of California

RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a Resolution authorizing the President of the Board to execute an Agreement with The Regents of the University of California for an Integrated Nurse Leadership Program, in the amount of $60,000 for the period of April 1, 2009 through April 30, 2011.

BACKGROUND:

The University of California (UC) received a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (Foundation) to conduct a program titled “Integrated Nurse Leadership Program”. The Foundation and UC determined a subcontractor should participate in this project. San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) was selected as the subcontractor.

DISCUSSION:

SMMC will develop, implement and sustain a sepsis project for the medical units within the hospital. The focus will be on implementing best practices for severe sepsis screening and administration of early goal directed therapy.

County Counsel has reviewed and approved this Agreement and Resolution as to form. The Resolution will allow the County to accept the grant award and appropriate the funds that will pay for the participation in the program.

Submission of the Agreement was delayed because the email forwarding the documents was not received until December 10, 2009.

Approval of this Agreement contributes to the Shared Vision 2025 outcome of a Healthy Community by providing funds which will allow for the development of programs that will reduce cases of sepsis within the community. It is anticipated that 95% of sepsis cases will comply with best practices screening.
