SUBJECT:

Green Business Program Awards

RECOMMENDATION:

Honor and recognize local businesses that have become certified as a Green Business in the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County.

BACKGROUND:

On April 24, 2007, the Board adopted Resolution No. 069250 to establish a pilot phase of the existing Association of Bay Area Government’s Green Business Program with several cities in San Mateo County. The pilot program ended with extremely positive results and the program has continued to expand into new cities within San Mateo County. In addition to the program being available in the unincorporated areas of the County, it is also now available in the cities/towns of: Burlingame, Belmont, Daly City, Half Moon Bay, Millbrae, Pacifica, Portola Valley, Redwood City, San Bruno, and San Carlos. Since the program’s inception, nearly 100 businesses have become certified green businesses representing ten different business sectors.

To achieve Green Business certification, businesses must be in compliance with their existing permits and applicable environmental regulations, as well as take steps to conserve natural resources, prevent pollution, and pledge to continue to stay green by upholding the measures established to become certified. Some actions businesses have implemented to obtain certification include:

buying recycled-content paper and copying double-sided

reducing waste and ensuring recycling programs are in place

    cleaning with less toxic products

using efficient lighting systems to save energy

conserving water with efficient landscaping, low-flow toilets and faucet aerators

DISCUSSION:

A total of thirty-six businesses in the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County have participated in the program and received certification. The thirty recently certified green businesses in the County’s unincorporated areas include:
