THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

DESIGNATES FEBRUARY 2010 AS

AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH

Whereas, African American History Month was originally established in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American author and scholar; and

Whereas, African American History Month began out of Dr. Woodson’s desire that each February, all Americans would be reminded of their ethnic roots and reflect on the contributions diverse communities have made to our national identity; and

Whereas, African Americans designed our beautiful Capital City, gave us the melodic rhythms of New Orleans Jazz, make new discoveries in science and medicine, and invite us to examine ourselves in the pages of classic literature; and

Whereas, through the work of Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall and others, the

African American community has steadily made progress and moved our Nation along the

path of justice; and

Whereas, African American History Month examines and honors the collective contributions and accomplishments of Africans, and those of African descent, through a variety of programs, including lectures, exhibitions, cultural activities; and

Whereas, these programs and activities increase the public’s awareness of the rich history of African Americans; and

Whereas, San Mateo County is a diverse community that appreciates the contributions and accomplishments of African Americans in the County and the Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of

San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates February 2010 as African American History Month.
