DESIGNATING APRIL 2010 AS

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES

HEALTHY COUNTIES MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, the National Association of Counties (NACo) celebrates National County Government Month each April to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of county government, and;

WHEREAS, the NACo National County Government Month of 2010 is Healthy Counties Month, and;

WHEREAS, the nation’s 3,608 counties provide a variety of essential public services to communities serving 300 million Americans; and

WHEREAS, San Mateo County takes seriously its responsibility to protect and enhance the health, welfare, and safety of its residents in sensible and cost-effective ways; and

WHEREAS, San Mateo County offers residents access to affordable health care through the Health System, excellent recreational space through the Parks Department, and County-sponsored activities to support a healthy lifestyle; and

WHEREAS, San Mateo County supports community-based organizations that provide culturally-sensitive health screenings and wellness programs; and

WHEREAS, in April 2010, communities in each Supervisorial District celebrated Streets Alive and residents from around the county gathered to Take A Hike, activities which encouraged residents of all

ages to enjoy outdoor activities with friends and family; and

WHEREAS, since 1991, NACo has encouraged counties across the country to actively promote county government programs and services to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of the nation’s counties to meet the needs of the community; and

WHEREAS, NACo and San Mateo County are partnering with all levels of government to better serve our communities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors designates April 2010 as National Association of Counties Healthy Counties Month.
