PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING MAY 2010 AS

Older Americans Month

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, the month of May is recognized nationally as Older Americans Month to highlight and acknowledge the unique contributions of seniors to neighborhoods and communities throughout San Mateo County, California and the United States as a nation; and

   

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, in compliance with the Older Americans Act, established the San Mateo County Commission on Aging on November 12, 1969; and

   

WHEREAS, since its inception, the Commission on Aging has advised the Board and enhanced the quality of life for older adults by working extensively on such issues as legislation, elder abuse prevention, healthcare, transportation, affordable and accessible housing, cultural competence and linguistic access, and the availability of information and resources; and

   

WHEREAS, in 2009, older adults volunteered more than 205,850 hours in such areas as community and economic development, disaster relief, education, housing, health and nutrition, social services and public safety, at a value of approximately $4.7 million; and

 
     

WHEREAS, older adults possess a wealth of experience and historical knowledge, making them a crucial component of the ties that link individuals with family, and in-turn with the overall community. Older Americans have contributed greatly to all aspects of society and deserve to have their rights and privileges protected.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates May 2010 as Older Americans Month in San Mateo County. The Board also joins the US Administration on Aging in encouraging all San Mateo County citizens to observe this month by showing appreciation and respect to all of our older Americans.
