THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING MAY 10, 2010 TO MAY 14, 2010 AS

IDENTITY THEFT AWARENESS WEEK

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, identity theft continues to be one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States, with an estimated eleven million victims last year; and

   

WHEREAS, identity theft is a serious crime that occurs when someone uses your personally identifiable information without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes; and

   

WHEREAS, California ranks fourth in identity theft nationwide and the Federal Trade Commission received 165,033 complaints of identity theft and identity fraud in the state in 2009; and

   

WHEREAS, FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association and LifeLock have joined forces to educate law enforcement on the growing threats of identity theft through events such as the FBI-LEEDA/LifeLock Identity Theft Summit on May 11th in Belmont; and

 

WHEREAS, strengthened efforts of federal, state and local law enforcement will help educate consumers and businesses on helping protect against identity theft.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates May 10, 2010 to May 14, 2010 as Identity Theft Awareness Week in San Mateo County and encourages citizens to become educated about identity theft and the various means to help protect their personally identifiable information.
