RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF SENATE BILL 920 (YEE), ALPHABETICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY: DISTRIBUTION

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that
|
|
WHEREAS, according to the California Department of Resources Recovery and Recycling has found that phone books and directories comprise an estimated 24,149 tons of the total disposed waste stream in California in 2008 and that amount has increased with the growth of third-party directory publishers; and
|
|
WHEREAS, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, not publishing a phone book reduces greenhouse gases by about three times as much as does recycling; and
|
|
WHEREAS, telephone books have become wasteful and obsolete with the advent of smart phones, Internet search engines, and free online directory services; and
|
|
WHEREAS, many customers have expressed a preference to no receive telephone directories; and
|
|
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 920 would require telephone corporations and third party producers of telephone directories to allow customers to opt out of receiving future directories; and
|
|
WHEREAS, Senate Bill 920 would help to reduce waste and consumer utility costs while conserving resources and protecting the environment.
|
|
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Board of Supervisors by the adoption of this resolution hereby supports Senate Bill 920 (Yee) regarding the distribution of alphabetical telephone directories distribution.
