SUBJECT:
Metropolitan Transit Commission grant proposal for a regional bike sharing program
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a Resolution in support of the County’s participation in a collaborative proposal for a regional bike sharing program to be submitted to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
BACKGROUND:
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) is funding a Bay Area Climate Initiative Innovative Grant Program. The County of San Mateo partnered with the City of Redwood City to submit a letter of interest that included a bike sharing program for city and county employees. After reviewing the letters of interest, MTC recommended that the San Francisco Municipal Transit Authority, the County of San Mateo, Redwood City, SamTrans and the Valley Transit Authority join together with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to submit a regional bike sharing proposal. These entities have come together to develop a collaborative proposal that will offer bike sharing at transit hubs and other locations in San Francisco, San Jose, Redwood City and one or two more cities in Santa Clara County
DISCUSSION:
If funded, the bike sharing program will offer city and county employees in Redwood City the opportunity to bike to offsite meetings and use a bike for exercise or errands on breaks and lunch hours. The proposal includes up to 100 bikes placed in the Redwood City area. Although bike station locations have not been determined, the CalTrain station, Redwood City Hall and the County campus are all potential locations. Access to a bike fleet on the County campus is expected to reduce carbon emissions and encourage employees to ride a bike for transportation and exercise during the work day.
