PROCLAMATION IN RECOGNITION OF

 

THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY

OF THE

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

 

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

   
 

WHEREAS, July 26, 2010 marks the 20th year since the passage and signing of the landmark civil rights legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990; and

   
 

WHEREAS, this legislation established a clear and comprehensive mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities; and

   
 

WHEREAS, the ADA has expanded opportunities of individuals with disabilities by reducing barriers, changing perceptions, and increasing full participation in community life; and

 
 

WHEREAS, there are over 56 million Americans with disabilities and of that number, 140,000 are residents of San Mateo County; and

   
 

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities was created on September 10, 1991 by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors to promote the independence and full participation of people with disabilities in San Mateo County; and

   
 

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities celebrates and recognizes the progress that has been made under the ADA, and reaffirms their commitment to the principles of equality, accessibility and inclusion through continued efforts towards achieving full ADA compliance,

   
 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that this Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County hereby recognizes the 20th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the significance of equality it has provided for residents with disabilities in San Mateo County.
