WHEREAS, on July 24, 2010, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Pacifica will celebrate 100 years of ministering to the communities of the coastside south of San Francisco; and

WHEREAS, St. Andrew began with a small group of people in what was then called Salada Beach who wanted to organize as a Presbyterian congregation, chartering that congregation on July 24, 1910, as the Presbyterian Church of Salada Beach in the Little Brown Church; and

WHEREAS, the Little Brown Church became a true community church where people were married, baptized and buried regardless of religious affiliation, and the longtime pastor of the church, Herschel Harkins (for whom the Pacifica Pier is dedicated), served the church from 1943 to his retirement in 1965; and

WHEREAS, in the early 1950’s, development in Pedro Valley expanded the population and a new church building was constructed to house the Pedro Valley Presbyterian Church, which eventually merged with the Little Brown Church as the St. Andrew United Presbyterian Church in 1967, ten years after the incorporation of Pacifica, and in 1979, through the efforts of the Presbytery of San Francisco and American Baptist Churches of the West, the Terra Nova Church Center was dedicated and occupied by St. Andrew and Vista Del Mar Baptist Church. In 1983, as an outreach to the community, the two congregations opened the Terra Nova Christian Preschool and Day Care, which continues to serve local families.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, on July 24, 2010, hereby recognizes St. Andrew Presbyterian Church for a century of service along the San Mateo County Coastside, from 1910-2010.
