RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF ASSEMBLY BILL 1373 (LIEU), ADVERTISING: GRANT DEED COPY SERVICES

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, there have recently been several “hire for service scams” throughout California; and

WHEREAS, scammers have preyed on unsuspecting homeowners by sending them solicitations offering to sell them copies of their grant deeds to prove ownership of their homes for several hundreds of dollars and sometimes asking for even more expensive fees to ensure faster delivery; and

WHEREAS, homeowners can obtain a copy of their grant deed or another record of title to their property for a nominal fee, typically $15; and

WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 1373 (Lieu) would restrict the activities of grant deed copy services by prohibiting certain misleading representations and requiring specific disclosures, including the addition of language advising homeowners that the solicitation is not associated with any governmental organization and that they can obtain a copy of their grant deed or other record of title from the County Recorder in their county for a nominal fee.

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Board of Supervisors by the adoption of this Resolution hereby supports Assembly Bill 1373 (Lieu) regarding grant deed copy services.
