RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a Resolution authorizing the:

A)

President of the Board to execute an Agreement with the California Department of Public Health for the Immunization Assistance Program for the term of July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011, in the amount of $283,911; and

Chief of the Health System or designee to execute contract amendments which modify the funding amount by no more than $25,000 (in aggregate), and/or modify the contract term and/or services so long as the modified term or services is/are within the current or revised fiscal provisions.

BACKGROUND:

The California Department of Public Health Immunization Branch provides funding to local health departments to ensure immunization program management, service delivery, population assessment, surveillance and outbreak control, provider quality assurance, consumer information, immunization data tracking, and vaccine management is maintained. The Immunization Branch has funded the San Mateo County Immunization Program for more than 20 years. In addition, it provides support for the perinatal hepatitis B prevention project and participation in the Bay Area Regional Immunization Registry (BARR).

DISCUSSION:

The Healthy People 2010 national goal is to have 95% of children six years and younger in population-based immunization registries. BARR is a critical tool for this success. All San Mateo Medical Center pediatric, teen and adult clinics are actively participating in BARR. Additionally, Ravenswood Family Health Center, the County’s community-based clinic, and five pediatric providers are enrolled. With the continued and expanded implementation of BARR, accuracy of data on immunizations has improved, reducing missed opportunities and improving time-sensitive vaccine coverage. In addition, BARR provides the ability to track children and adults across providers, generate appointment reminders, and maintain records more efficiently.

Funding provided by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) will facilitate continued vaccine-preventable disease activities, participation in the BARR, and support the perinatal hepatitis B prevention project in Community Health.

This Agreement and Resolution has been reviewed and approved by County Counsel.

This Agreement contributes to the Shared Vision 2025 outcome of a Healthy Community by providing funding to support immunization activities to increase immunization rates in San Mateo County. It is anticipated that 85% of low-income children will be up-to-date with their immunizations at age 2.
