PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING SEPTEMBER 2010 AS

Hunger Action Month

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, since 2007, Feeding America and its partners, including corporations and other nonprofit agencies, have designated September as Hunger Action Month to motivate everyone to combat hunger in the United States through contributions of food, funds or time; and

   

WHEREAS, based on 2009 research by Feeding America and federal statistics, approximately one in six Americans struggles with hunger daily; and

   

WHEREAS, California’s food insecurity rate is 12 percent, including a child food insecurity rate of more than 18.5 percent; and

   

WHEREAS, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties estimates that as much as one in four people in its two-county service area faces hunger; for the six months that ended Dec. 31, 2009, Second Harvest distributed 17 percent more food to 17 percent more people compared with the same time period for 2008; and

   

WHEREAS, some 44 percent of Second Harvest’s client families report having at least one member under age 18, and of that, more than 30 percent are age 5 or younger; half of the surveyed families are choosing between food and rent, and at least one-third are forced to choose between food and medicine.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates September 2010 as Hunger Action Month, and joins Feeding America and Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties in spotlighting hunger on the Peninsula and encouraging organizations public and private, as well as individuals, to join the ongoing fight against hunger.
