RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

2010 LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK

***************************************

WHEREAS, the need is critical to provide treatment to almost one million people in the United States living with or in remission from a form of blood cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma; and

 

WHEREAS, blood cancers can strike anyone regardless of age, gender and ethnicity, and one person is diagnosed with a blood cancer in the United States every four seconds; and

 

WHEREAS, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was founded in 1949 and is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services, with a mission to cure the varying forms of blood cancer and improve the quality of life of patients and their families; and

 

WHEREAS, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has invested more than $750 million in research, approximately $72 million in fiscal year 2010 alone, bringing together teams of scientists from different disciplines and producing innovative patient treatments in an accelerated time frame and contributing to many breakthrough cancer treatments; and

 

WHEREAS, the Light the Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual fundraising event that involves thousands of participants and raises funds for vital, lifesaving research and patient services, paying tribute and bringing hope to people battling cancer as participants carry illuminated balloons while they walk in a show of support, and whereas the 2010 Light the Night Walk is taking place on Saturday, October 2, 2010;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby honors and commends THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY 2010 LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK and, on behalf of all citizens, the Board expresses sincere appreciation for this organization’s achievements and contributions.
