THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA HONORS AND COMMENDS | ||||
DR. FRANK J. OMOWALE SATTERWHITE | ||||

Whereas, Dr. Frank J. Omowale Satterwhite has been a resident of San Mateo County for over forty years, and has demonstrated unwavering commitment to the county through service on the East Palo Alto City Council, the San Mateo County Planning Commission, and as Assistant to the Superintendent and Acting Superintendent of the Ravenswood City School District and tenure on numerous non-profit boards; and | ||||
Whereas, Dr. Satterwhite tirelessly advocates for social justice, systems change and improving the quality of life for communities of color here in San Mateo County and throughout the nation; and | ||||
Whereas, Dr. Satterwhite is a graduate of Howard University, Southern Illinois University, and Stanford University where he received his Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. degrees, respectively; and | ||||
Whereas, Dr. Satterwhite has been the recipient of numerous awards including the KQED Public Television’s Unsung Hero Award, the Peninsula Community Foundation Person of the Year Award, and the National Council of Negro Women Community Service Award; and | ||||
Whereas, Dr. Satterwhite founded the Community Development Institute (CDI) in 1979 to combat the causes of racism and poverty in diverse low-income communities where he served as president until 2002; and | ||||
Whereas, under Dr. Satterwhite’s leadership, CDI launched a number of programs, including the Leadership Training Academy and the Black Male Rebirth Program, that served historically underserved populations; and | ||||
Whereas, in 2000, Dr. Satterwhite founded the National Community Development Institute (NCDI), a non-profit, technical support center whose mission is to build capacity for social change in communities of color and other underserved communities in a culturally-based way; | ||||
Whereas, Dr. Satterwhite is now retiring from NCDI, and during his distinguished career assisted more than 1,100 organizations in 85 cities and 40 states; and | ||||
Whereas, Dr. Satterwhite has transformed his passion for community into long-term sustainable change in San Mateo County and beyond. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby commends and honors Dr. Frank J. Omowale Satterwhite upon his retirement for his dedication to social justice in San Mateo County. | ||||
