PROCLAMING OCTOBER 2010 AS

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

AWARENESS MONTH

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between 15-44 years of age, and one in six Californians will experience domestic violence during their lifetime; and

   

WHEREAS, experts estimate that, in the United States, the direct costs for medical and mental health care related to domestic violence are $4.1billion annually, and domestic violence is estimated to cause a loss of $900 million in lost days of work each year for its victims; and

   

WHEREAS, over 8000 residents of San Mateo County called CORA’s hotline last year and domestic violence resulted in over 2500 related 911 calls to law enforcement agencies; and

   

WHEREAS, in San Mateo County, over 6000 children witnessed domestic violence in their home and 220 women and children were provided emergency shelter and transitional housing to escape their abusers; and

   

WHEREAS, San Mateo County is committed to eliminating all forms of family violence and abuse.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, proclaims the month of October 2010 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, to raise awareness and to encourage all citizens of San Mateo County to rid our community of domestic violence.
