FROM:

David S. Boesch, County Manager

SUBJECT:

Employee of the Month for November 2010

RECOMMENDATION:

Honor Aimee Wong as Employee of the Month for November 2010 and authorize the President of the Board to sign the commendation.

BACKGROUND:

The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employee of the Month for November 2010 is Aimee Wong, an Administrative Assistant I in the Health System.

DISCUSSION:

Aimee Wong began her career with the County in 2001 as an Administrative Secretary II for the Aging and Adult Services Division. She was then promoted to the position of Administrative Assistant I for Health Policy and Planning and currently serves as the Division’s administrative lead for a three-person team.

Aimee provides an outstanding level of performance. She always maintains a positive attitude and a deep commitment to a productive work environment. Her “can do” attitude is infectious and as a result she has raised the level of performance among her peers and set this expectation for her supervisors and colleagues. She always does her best and confronts difficult situations and challenges with a positive outlook. In a personal assessment Aimee wrote: “ The most meaningful part of my work is knowing that my administrative support helps Health Policy and Planning do important work in our community, which ultimately makes San Mateo County a better place to live. I get to help a growing group of compassionate and progressive individuals who dedicate their work to promoting health equity through upstream thinking and efforts. My job is to be there for them when needed and help them with any aspect of, no matter how big or small, their projects.” Aimee understands the mission of the division and her role in furthering the mission. She has also expressed interest in becoming a facilitator for the Diversity Film Series, a discussion series that trained facilitators lead for all Health System staff to explore cultural competence around race, ethnicity, gender identity, and age. Aimee has attended many of these sessions as a participant and now wants to help run these sessions.

Aimee provides service excellence and has a deep commitment to the organizational mission and is willing to take on new challenges to further that mission. She exemplifies the professional and personal commitment to public service.

Aimee has demonstrated exceptional performance for a number of years, yet her level of service and positive attitude have become even more visible as she has supported colleagues and ensured excellent service in these challenging times. She understands her role is connected to the Health System’s broader mission and uses it as motivation for going above and beyond. Healthy Policy and Planning is a small division and the success of their work depends on having staff members who are flexible, creative and always do more than the minimum required. Aimee’s interest in becoming a Diversity Film facilitator is just one example of the expectations she sets for herself and her colleagues.

Approval of the Employee of the Month contributes to the Shared Vision 2025 outcome of Prosperous Community by recognizing employees that foster innovation and excellence in the services provided.

Our County is fortunate to have Aimee Wong as one of its outstanding employees.
