Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Supervisor Carole Groom

SUBJECT:

San Mateo County Children, Youth and Family Budget 2010

RECOMMENDATION:

Accept the report on the San Mateo County Children, Youth and Family Budget 2010.

BACKGROUND:

In 2008, the Peninsula Partnership Leadership Council in collaboration with the San Mateo County Youth Commission drafted a Bill Rights for Children and Youth. It established principles to guide the success of all children and youth and earned our Board’s support.

DISCUSSION:

The County Manager’s Office surveyed all departments to identify the programs and services that support those principles and assist children, youth and their families. The attached San Mateo County Children, Youth and Family Budget 2010 reports $323 million has been allocated to programs and services that focus on academic achievement, health, early childhood development, youth development, safety, and social and economic well-being. This budget is not meant as a simple catalogue of services, but rather a tool to provide community leaders information that can be used to identify service gaps, duplication, and opportunities for greater collaboration. In future years this budget will also include a report card on efforts to improve outcomes for children, youth and families.

Accepting this report will contribute to the 2025 Shared Vision outcome of Collaborative Community by informing residents of services and how public dollars are spent.
