Accept a Donation from the Western States Information Network

RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a Resolution accepting the donation of $3,000 from the Western States Information Network to the Sheriff’s Office Gang Intelligence Unit in support of the 3rd Annual Gang Symposium.

BACKGROUND:

The mission of the Sheriff’s Office Gang Intelligence Unit is to collect, evaluate, analyze and disseminate information related to criminal events, primarily gang activity; assist with training and long-term investigations including surveillance and other specialized investigative techniques, with an emphasis on dismantling criminal street gangs which affect the quality of life in San Mateo County.

DISCUSSION:

The Sheriff’s Office received a generous donation from the Western States Information Network in the amount of $3,000. The donation was specifically designated to support the 3rd Annual Gang Symposium hosted by the Sheriff’s Office Gang Intelligence Unit held on October 20 through 22, 2010.

Nearly 250 local, state and federal law enforcement officers and probation officers attended the three-day conference. Attendees received training on current gang trends, investigative techniques and other gang related topics. The 24 hours of instruction was provided by top experts from around the country.

The donation from the Western States Information Network will be used to off-set expenses associated with the instructors and the hotel where the symposium was held.

County Counsel has reviewed and approved the Resolution as to form.

Acceptance of this donation contributes to the Shared Vision 2025 outcome of a Healthy Community by providing specialized training and dissemination of information in order to dismantle criminal street gangs which affect the quality of life in the County and beyond.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no Net County Cost associated with this donation.
