COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 16-22, 2010 AS

CHINA CLIPPER WEEK

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, on November 22, 1935, Captain Edwin Musick, piloting Pan American Airways’ China Clipper on the first transoceanic commercial flight departed San Francisco Bay en route to Manila via Hawaii, Midway Island, Wake Island, and Guam; and

   

WHEREAS, this inaugural flight quickly established the logistical and economic feasibility of transoceanic mail service and commercial passenger transportation and was an historical milestone in aviation history for both the United States and the world; and

   

WHEREAS, this initial flight, only 32 years following the Wright Brothers’ successes at Kitty Hawk, quickly captured the imagination of travelers worldwide by overcoming the greatest technological, logistical, geographical, and navigational challenges of its time; and

   

WHEREAS, the development of the China Clipper routes across the Pacific Ocean firmly established San Francisco as an economic and logistical hub of operations, thereby establishing the City as the nation’s preeminent “Gateway to the Pacific;” and

WHEREAS, the international trade and travel industry that followed as a result of this inaugural China Clipper flight has had an invaluable impact to the economic vitality and strategic security of San Francisco and the entire Bay Area

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates the week of November 16 through November 22, 2010 as China Clipper Week in San Mateo County and encourages all citizens to be aware of the 75th anniversary of the historical significance of the China Clipper.
