SUBJECT:

Appointments to SMC Event Center Board of Directors

RECOMMENDATION:

Appoint Mr. Stan Pastorino of Half Moon Bay; Dr. David Caro of Hillsborough; and Mr. Mike Pacelli of Pacifica to the San Mateo County Event Center Board of Directors.

BACKGROUND:

There are three vacancies on the Event Center’s seven-member Board of Directors, including the balance of the late-Jack Olsen’s term.

If appointed, Dr. Caro and Mr. Pacelli would each serve full, three-year terms expiring Sept. 30, 2013.

If appointed, Mr. Pastorino would serve the remainder of Mr. Olsen’s term, which expires Sept. 30, 2011. This seat is specifically designated to represent the county’s agricultural community.

Event Center directors are each allowed a maximum of four, three-year terms.

DISCUSSION:

Dr. Caro is a practicing urologist, both privately and at the San Mateo Medical Center. He brings great experience – including financial work – serving on non-profit boards and has a personal interest in seeing the Event Center grow in success.

Mr. Pacelli has been a land-use consultant on the Peninsula for nearly three decades. His experiences include direct involvement in the financing and construction of the first “skyscraper” in Daly City and membership on the outreach team that brought BART to Millbrae and SFO. He also currently serves on various boards, including that of Sustainable San Mateo County, Doelger Senior Center, Seton Medical Center Foundation and First National Bank of Northern California.

Mr. Pastorino is a coastside farmer and owns Pastorino Farms. He is a former member of the Half Moon Bay city council, the Mid-Coast Sewer Authority and the San Mateo County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Since 1986, Mr. Pastorino has served on the San Mateo County Farm Bureau.

All three would be great assets for the Event Center.
