PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, a complete education must include the ARTS to develop essential skills and abilities because ARTS EDUCATION helps prepare our students for the expectations of the twenty- first century workforce; and

WHEREAS, ARTS learning prepares every child to become a creative, independent thinker and the study of the ARTS develops creative thinking, problem solving, and communication skills and fosters self discipline and teamwork capabilities; and

WHEREAS, ARTS learning provides opportunities for students to explore and express who they are, developing confidence and self-esteem, which are critically important life skills for children and youth to possess, particularly those who may struggle academically; and

WHEREAS, the ARTS make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor numbers exhaust what we can know and that the limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition; and, extensive research has demonstrated that ARTS EDUCATION engages students in learning, contributes to higher test scores and reduces truancy and dropout rates,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates the month of March 2011 as ARTS EDUCATION MONTH and encourages everyone to support ARTS EDUCATION in our schools and recognize the great value ARTS EDUCATION provides.
