THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING APRIL 4, 2011 TO APRIL 10, 2011 AS

PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the Board of Supervisors that, throughout the country, the week of April 4, 2011 to April 10, 2011 will be designated as PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK with the theme of “Safety is No Accident: Live Injury-Free,” and that Public Health work has made significant contributions to improving heath status and life expectancy, and reducing injury, disability and disease in our residents; and

   

WHEREAS, PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK provides the opportunity for the public to learn about gains attributable to advances in Public Health over the last 100 years, and that noted advancements in Public Heath include improvements in motor vehicle safety, wearing helmets, using child safety seats, reduction in work-related injuries, smoke-free multi-unit housing facilities, control of infectious diseases, and a safe and healthier food supply, as well as improvements in prenatal, infant and child health services, resulting in healthier mothers and babies, decreases in diseases through vaccinations, lifestyle modifications, such as smoking cessation and better eating and exercise habits, that are decreasing the risks for chronic diseases such as heart disease and stroke; and

   

WHEREAS, these advancements in Public Health are credited with the addition of 25 years of life expectancy over the past century and San Mateo County recognizes the many programs designed to improve the health and fitness of its employees and residents, such as Employee Health and Fitness, As Fresh as It Gets, Tobacco Prevention Program, Get Healthy San Mateo, Chronic Disease Prevention, Built Environment, the Parks Department Health Promotion Campaign, and many others; and

   

WHEREAS, the county understands that Public Health is much more than health-care services. We recognize that the social, economic and physical environments in our communities enhance the opportunities for our residents to enjoy long, healthy and injury free lives.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates April 4, 2011 to April 10, 2011 as Public Health Week: “Safety is No Accident: Live Injury-Free,” throughout our community, and supports efforts aimed at implementing positive solutions to impact community health and safety and at developing policies to increase the opportunities for all residents to make healthy and safe choices.
