THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

    COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

    RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

    MICHAEL MURPHY

    UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE COUNTY OF SAN MATEO

    ***************************************

    WHEREAS, MICHAEL MURPHY graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as an officer in the U.S. Army prior to attending the University of California’s Boalt Hall School of Law and entering into private practice; and

 

    WHEREAS, MICHAEL joined the Civil Division of the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office in 1982; and

 

    WHEREAS, MICHAEL served as a Chief Deputy for a number of years before being elevated to the position of Assistant County Counsel in 2006 and ultimately appointed as County Counsel in 2007; and

 

    WHEREAS, MICHAEL was the primary land use attorney for the County for over 20 years, responsible for legal work related to the Devil’s Slide Tunnel and San Bruno Mountain Habitat Conservation Plan; and

 

    WHEREAS, MICHAEL represented the County in numerous challenges to the San Mateo County Coastal Plan in both State and Federal courts, successfully defended the County’s adoption of the first banking privacy law, stopped the Port of Oakland from dumping hazardous dredged spoils off the San Mateo coast, personally handled litigation arising out of construction of the San Mateo Medical Center, and led the County’s effort in responding to the Lehman Brothers Bankruptcy; and

 

    WHEREAS, MICHAEL’S assignments over the years have included nearly every County department and he has been integral to the successes of the County;

 

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby honors and commends MICHAEL MURPHY for his many years of service to the County and its residents. On behalf of all citizens, the Board expresses its appreciation for MICHAEL MURPHY’S numerous contributions and wishes sincere congratulations upon his well-deserved retirement.
