PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING APRIL 10-16, 2011, AS

National Volunteer Week

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, since 1974, when President Richard M. Nixon signed an executive order establishing an official, annual celebration of volunteering, every US president, plus countless officials at the state, county and municipal levels nationwide, have marked volunteer week in their communities; and

   

WHEREAS, every day, throughout the United States, including all her territories, volunteers of all socioeconomic backgrounds are found in organizations large and small, public and private, doing what needs to be done to improve lives and perhaps even save a few; and

   

WHEREAS, in San Mateo County, countless thousands of volunteers help at schools, hospitals, community centers, public agencies, emergency shelters, food banks and places of worship; while myriad organizations provide generous support; and

   

WHEREAS, volunteers conduct and offer myriad types of counseling; legal advice; home construction and repair; health and dental care; neighborhood watch; environmental clean-up; transportation services; meal deliveries; parks and playground maintenance; and a variety of programs for children and youth; and

   

WHEREAS, while the contributions of what volunteers do can be measured in hours, dollars and cents, the actual value of their work is truly priceless by all standards, and the undeniable, positive results are easily seen in the health and well-being of people and families in San Mateo County, California and the United States.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates April 10-16, 2011, as National Volunteer Week. The Board recognizes and applauds anyone who donates his or her time, energy and/or other resources to help others simply for the joy of community service. The Board further expresses its gratitude to all volunteers of all ages in San Mateo County and extends sincere wishes for continued excellence.
