PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING APRIL 2011 AS | ||||
ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH | ||||

WHEREAS, National Alcohol Awareness Month was created to raise overall awareness and increase knowledge about alcohol abuse and alcoholism; a serious, yet treatable disease; especially for those under age 21; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the month of April 2011 is National Alcohol Awareness Month; and | ||||
WHEREAS, alcohol use among children and adolescents starts early and increases rapidly with age; and | ||||
WHEREAS, alcohol is a factor in the four leading causes of death among persons ages 10-24: motor vehicle crashes, unintentional injures, homicide and suicide in San Mateo County; and | ||||
WHEREAS, it is estimated that over a million and a half dollars in health related costs are incurred yearly by alcohol-related problems in San Mateo County; and | ||||
WHEREAS, throughout San Mateo County, community-based partnerships are acting locally to identify and address community-level conditions that promote or encourage underage alcohol use and to reduce the harmful consequences of alcohol use; and | ||||
WHEREAS, throughout San Mateo County, youth and adult residents, service provider agencies, schools, law enforcement, and others have joined these efforts to make positive changes in their communities. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County does hereby proclaim the month of April 2011, ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH and invites its employees and citizens to support efforts that contribute to community wellness throughout our county. | ||||
