DESIGNATES MAY 2011 AS

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

WHEREAS, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a time to recognize the rich cultural heritage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and their contributions to the state’s economic, social, and democratic institutions; and

WHEREAS, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have lived and worked in the state of California for over 159 years and have contributed to the rich cultural heritage of this state; and

WHEREAS, the diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander population in California numbers more than 4.6 million, or one in seven Californians, and is representative of more than twenty-two distinct Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander ethnic subgroups; and

WHEREAS, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders account for more than twenty-five percent of the population of San Mateo County, or more than 180,000 residents; and

WHEREAS, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month acknowledges and celebrates the contributions made by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the arts, education, sciences, government and economic development of California; and

WHEREAS, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month provides the opportunity to educate the public on the Asian American and Pacific Islander role in American history, and the advancement of civil rights and equal opportunity for all people of California.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo designates May 2011 as “Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month” to honor the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our county and California.
