PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING MAY 2011 AS

Older Americans Month

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, the month of May is recognized nationally as Older Americans Month to highlight and acknowledge the unique contributions of seniors to us, our local communities as well as to our state and nation; and

   

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, in compliance with the Older Americans Act, established the San Mateo County Commission on Aging on November 12, 1969; and

   

WHEREAS, the Commission on Aging serves as an advocate for the needs of seniors in San Mateo County and is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults by addressing such issues as health care, affordable and accessible housing, legislation, elder abuse and social isolation; and

   

WHEREAS, adults age 65 and older currently comprise approximately 13.1 percent of the county’s population compared with 11.2 percent statewide; by 2030, the number of seniors in San Mateo County is expected to skyrocket, with nearly one out of four residents being over the age of 65; and

   

WHEREAS, older adults are a vital resource to the overall well-being of the community, contributing their depth of experience, knowledge and skills. Older Americans have contributed greatly to all aspects of society and deserve to have their rights and privileges protected and their health and safety maintained.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates May 2011 as Older Americans Month, and joins the US Administration on Aging in encouraging everyone in San Mateo County to observe this month by showing appreciation and respect to all older Americans.
