Appointment to the Board of Retirement, San Mateo County Employees’ Retirement Association

RECOMMENDATION:

Appoint Michal F. Settles to the Board of Retirement, San Mateo County Employees’ Retirement Association

BACKGROUND:

The Board of Retirement, San Mateo County Employees’ Retirement Association, currently has one vacancy on its nine-member roster. Each appointed term is three years, with a maximum of 12 years. If appointed, Dr. Settles would serve a partial term expiring June 30, 2013.

DISCUSSION:

Michal F. Settles, of Half Moon Bay, holds a University of San Francisco doctorate in organizational leadership, with a focus on organizational behavior and structure. She also is a certified as a retirement counselor and in retirement administration, as defined by the International Foundation for Retirement Education.

From 1995 until her early retirement in 2006, Dr. Settles was an HR manager for BART, where she chaired the investment plans committee and worked with PERS on the BART contribution plan.

Since retirement, she continues to contribute to retirement education through City College of San Francisco and the International Management Network.

Dr. Settle’s knowledge of and experience with retirement issues would be tremendous assets to SAMCERA’s retirement board.
