RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING

 

AUDREY RUST

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Audrey Rust has inspired and led the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) as the President for the past 24 years; and

   

WHEREAS, Audrey Rust has been the powerhouse and vision, ensuring the protection of 63,000 acres of amazing open space lands in San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz Counties; and

   

WHEREAS, Audrey Rust raised more than $325 million for POST’s land-saving work, including $200 million to protect 20,000 acres along the San Mateo coast through POST’s 2001-2005 Saving the Endangered Coast campaign; and

   

WHEREAS, Audrey Rust has preserved several jewels in the County including Rancho Corral de Tierra near Montara, Bair Island in Redwood City, Mindego Hill along Skyline Ridge near La Honda, and most recently the transfer to the County of the Pillar Point Bluffs along the coast; and

   

WHEREAS, Audrey Rust has provided leadership and incredible energy to bring diverse groups together in working to advance the land stewardship of our beautiful open spaces including the Peninsula Work Group, the Living Landscape Initiative, and several others; and

   

WHEREAS, Audrey Rust has received many honors including the 2010 Athena Award, Times Mirror-Chevron National Conservationist of the Year Award, the California League of Conservation Voters Environmental Leadership Award, the Cynthia Pratt Laughlin Medal, and the Garden Club of America’s top environmental honor; and

   

WHEREAS, to quote Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, "Audrey Rust's achievements in more than two decades as presidents of Peninsula Open Space Trust are as magnificent as the natural spaces she has worked so hard to preserve;" and

   

WHEREAS, to quote Audrey Rust, "When I go walking in a natural area, it makes me realize what's right with the world. Feelings of being overwhelmed with problems or cynicism about the world just can't stand up to the buoyancy and beauty of nature. It restores my sense of possibility.”

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors recognizes, honors, and is indebted to Audrey Rust for her extraordinary leadership and vision as the President of the Peninsula Open Space Trust, and her service to the residents and visitors of the Peninsula, in leaving a legacy of world class natural areas for generations to enjoy and enhance their lives.
