RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

THE SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL

AIRPORT/COMMUNITY ROUNDTABLE

ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 30th ANNIVERSARY

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, San Francisco International Airport, the major commercial service airport in Northern California and the second busiest in the state, is owned and operated by the City and County of San Francisco and is located entirely within San Mateo County; and

   

WHEREAS, in 1980, a Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) was completed by the Counties of San Francisco and San Mateo to address several issues related to the operation of San Francisco International Airport, including aircraft noise impacts; and

   

WHEREAS, the San Francisco International Airport/Community Roundtable was created in 1981,as a voluntary committee of elected and appointed representatives to (1) monitor the implementation of the recommendations of the Joint Land Use Study (JLUS), regarding aircraft noise issues and (2) provide access to local elected officials, Airport management, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) staff, and airline representatives to address community noise impacts from aircraft operations at San Francisco International Airport, via a public forum format; and

   

WHEREAS, the County of San Mateo was a founding member of the San Francisco International Airport/Community Roundtable and the County and 17 of the 20 cities/towns in the county are members of the Roundtable; and

   

WHEREAS, over the past 30 years the, San Francisco International Airport/Community Roundtable has achieved a number of significant accomplishments, including: (1) working with the FAA, the Airport, and the airlines to implement several aircraft operational procedures to reduce community noise impacts, (2) established an annual “Noise 101” educational workshop for Roundtable representatives and the public, (3) adopted a “No Noise Shift” policy, to insure that Roundtable actions will not “shift” aircraft noise from one community to another, (4) established a Fly Quiet Program and related video to publicly report the efforts of the airlines to fly quietly and to honor those airlines whose efforts demonstrate their commitment to help reduce community noise impacts, and (5) expanded and enhanced its media program; and

   

WHEREAS, the San Francisco International Airport/Community Roundtable is recognized by state and federal aviation officials as a model of intergovernmental cooperation regarding aircraft noise issues and served as a model for the creation of several other airport/community groups across the nation, including groups at Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles, and Oakland International Airports; and

 

WHEREAS, the San Francisco International Airport/Community Roundtable will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Wednesday, June 29, 2011.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the County of San Mateo Board of Supervisors hereby commends and congratulates the San Francisco International Airport/Community Roundtable on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, for its longevity without a local, state, or federal mandate to exist, its impressive list of aircraft noise mitigation actions, and its tireless efforts to help improve the quality of life for thousands of residents in San Mateo County.
