COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

DESIGNATES SEPTEMBER 2011 AS

NATIONAL RECOVERY MONTH

WHEREAS, substance use and co-occurring mental disorders and physical illnesses are major public health problems that affect people of all ages, races, and ethnicities and in all communities and have a tremendous medical, economic, and societal cost; and

WHEREAS, everyday, in San Mateo County, men, women, and youth enter treatment for substance use and mental disorders and begin the road to wellness and recovery; and

WHEREAS, persons in recovery lead sober, healthy, full, productive lives as workers, students, parents, citizens, and taxpayers as a direct result of prevention, treatment, and recovery services; and

WHEREAS, the substance use treatment and prevention providers of San Mateo County and staff from Behavioral Health and Recovery Services have dedicated themselves to the recovery process, saving lives, and to educating the public about alcoholism, drug use, addiction, co-occurring disorders and other treatment issues; and

WHEREAS, Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover; and

WHEREAS, year after year, San Mateo County continues to support Recovery Month’s mission to improve the lives of those living with these disorders, to celebrate individuals in recovery, and to acknowledge those working to provide recovery services.

WHEREAS, acknowledging these efforts in September 2011 offers advocates of recovery an opportunity to educate the public and policymakers about prevention, treatment and recovery;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates the month of September 2011 as National Recovery Month.
