THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

DESIGNATING SEPTEMBER 24, 2011 AS

NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY

WHEREAS, the County of San Mateo’s system of public lands includes parks, open space, greenways, forests, unique landscapes, natural streams and wetlands, a nature center, a marine reserve, and agricultural lands throughout and around the County that individually and collectively represent irreplaceable County resources; and

 

WHEREAS, public lands provide locally accessible natural and cultural resources for environmental learning, wildlife appreciation, recreation and fitness; and

   

WHEREAS, public lands promote civic ideals that include shared stewardship and recognition of public ownership; and

   

WHEREAS, shared stewardship requires the goodwill, cooperation, and active support of residents, community, county officials, business leaders, children, and adults; and

 

WHEREAS, recreation opportunities offered by public lands help families lead a more active lifestyle and learn about the beautiful parks and trails in San Mateo County, as evidenced by the success of Take A Hike San Mateo County; and

   

WHEREAS, land conservation efforts improve access to public land by urban residents and work to break down the barriers that prevent Americans and San Mateo County residents from actively utilizing their public lands; and

   

WHEREAS, National Public Lands Day, co-sponsored by the National Environmental Education Foundation, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Parks Service, U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, has become an annually anticipated event for local participation on publicly held lands in San Mateo County.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors designates September 24, 2011 as National Public Lands Day.
