Children's Special Dental Needs Fund

The Program

The Children's Special Dental Needs Fund provides support to children with special needs, ages 1 to 21, who are unable to receive necessary dental treatment due to lack of dental insurance, dental coverage or access to a specialty dentist. It works closely with a child's family, a health advocate, and other departments of San Mateo County in order to put a dental package together for the child with special needs.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Must be/have:
  • San Mateo County resident
  • Child with special needs
  • Ages 1 to 21
  • Requires dental treatment
  • Lack of dental insurance or limited dental coverage
  • Access to a specialty dentist

How do I apply?

Contact the Children's Dental Health Coordinator, at (650) 573-2248. The general application process typically consists of the following:
  1. County of San Mateo Employee refers a child, on their caseload, to the Children's Dental Health Coordinator.
  2. Program eligibility is then determined.
  3. If eligible, the needs of the child are discussed.
  4. Arrangements are made with the child's family.
