WHAT'S NEWMay 10, 2010Foster Parents to be Recognized by Board of SupervisorsSan Mateo County Children Need Local Foster FamiliesOn May 11, 2010, Mary Johnson, a Pacifica resident and foster parent since 1985, will represent foster parents throughout San Mateo County as the Board of Supervisors proclaims May National Foster Care month. Ms. Johnson became a foster parent 25 years ago, when a friend of her teenage son asked if he could live with her because his foster mother had been diagnosed with cancer. As a parent, her heart immediately went out to him, but she hesitated because she already had three schoolage children. The next day, she saw a television program about the needs of teens and in an instant, decided to take the boy in. “Since that day, my heart has been filled with love for these children and we are truly, one family,” she said of the 50 San Mateo County foster children and youth she has raised, along with her three biological children and one adopted son. May 10, 2010Human Services Agency Appoints New Children and Family Services DirectorDeborah Torres Brings Experience and Vision for CollaborationThis month, Deborah Lee Torres, LCSW, begins her new assignment as the Director of Children and Family Services for the San Mateo County-Human Services Agency (HSA). With 29 years of experience in child- and family-centered services, Ms. Torres comes to the post with extensive experience in child and youth mental health services, prevention work and collaboration with County departments and community partners. As Director of Prevention and Early Intervention Services with HSA for the last 3 years, Ms. Torres oversaw the Family Resource Centers, Homeless and Safety Net Services, Jobs for Youth, Veterans Services and Child Care Assistance. Prior to that, she held a range of supervisory and management positions in the County's Health Department - Mental Health Division for 21 years, including Deputy Director of Child and Youth Mental Health Services. “Deborah’s extensive background and leadership in this field, along with her expertise in prevention and mental health services, will be an enormous asset to vulnerable children in our community,” said Beverly Beasley Johnson, Director of the Human Services Agency. |
