Trail Work Day, San Pedro Valley Park, Saturday, February 13, 9 a.m. - Noon
Volunteers are needed to help rangers perform trail maintenance and repair throughout the park. Have a hand in maintaining these popular trails in this wonderful park on the coast. Meet at 9 a.m. in the Visitor Center. For more information, contact cschoof@co.sanmateo.ca.us or call (650) 355-8289.
Volunteer Trail Crew Leader Training Begins February 18
Are you a trail user? Would you like to learn more about how trails are constructed and maintained? If so, consider taking Volunteer Trail Crew Leader Training. The free, two-day training begins February 18th in the classroom with a hands-on field session to follow on February 20th. A third day is available for those who want to gain additional skills.
The sessions will be taught by Department rangers and volunteers from the Trail Center and will focus on the skills and techniques that will help volunteers to lead volunteer trail maintenance activities.
The program covers:
- Tool handling and safety
- Department trail standards
- How to maintain trails and address trail concerns, including erosion
- Ledership skills
The program consists of two required sessions and an optional third session:
- Thursday, February 18, evening class, in Redwood City (classroom)
- Saturday, February 20, day class, Huddart Park (hands on)
- Saturday, February 27, day class, Huddart Park (hands on)

Edgewood Park Trail Work Days: Saturday, March 13 and April 10
There is no better time than the spring to volunteer for a trail work day in this park. Help park rangers and fellow volunteers restore the trails on these two work days.
Work begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m., with plenty of time throughout the day set aside for breaks, lunch, and admiring the surroundings. Come prepared by wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and closed toe shoes. Please bring a refillable water bottle and lunch. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided.

Ongoing volunteer assistance is needed in the following areas:
Trail Patrols
Hike trails and report any trail conditions that you feel Park Rangers should be made aware of such as fallen limbs or trees, overgrowth that narrows the trail, wildlife sightings, hazardous conditions, etc. Volunteers also provide park and trails information to trail users. Completion of training required. |
Habitat Restoration
Restore parklands that have been impacted or harmed by the invasion of non-native plants. There are also ongoing projects at several parks. This activity is well suited for small groups. |
Trail/Facility Maintenance
Assist with the repair and upkeep of park picnic areas, tables, signs, fences, buildings, and other park facilities and structures. |

Special Group Volunteer Projects by Arrangement
Special service projects can be arranged for your group—corporate, youth, civic, school and faith-based. To plan your project, contact Volunteer Programs Coordinator Carla Schoof at cschoof@co.sanmateo.ca.us or (650) 599-1306.

Park Docents (Environmental Education)
Lead hikes for school groups and organizations. Introduce visitors to the ecology and history of a park and encourage appreciation of our natural features. |
Visitor Services
Staff reception desks at visitor centers and provide general park information to visitors. |
Special Events
Assist park staff with set-up of displays and represent park volunteers at booths; participate in special annual type events such as "Earth Day," "California Trails Day," the San Mateo County Fair, park special events and training workshops. |

- Willingness to complete related training
- Interested in serving as stewards of County Parks
