Application Form

 

San Mateo County residents interested in being considered for Grand Jury duty should mail a letter requesting an official application form during the month of February. Your letter of request should be sent to the following address:

Suspense Dates for Application
and Notification of Selected Jurors

  1. San Mateo County citizens interested to apply for grand jury duty must submit the county grand jury application by the first week in MAY.
  2. You will be notified by mail if you are not select by the end of MAY.
  3. If you are selected, you will be scheduled for an interview during the month of May. The number of applicants finally selected for random ballot is about 30 candidates
  4. In June, selected applicants are summoned to court where the random selection process is conducted. The 30 names are placed in a hopper and randomly draw to determine the final 19 grand jurors. Normally an additional five are selected as alternatives who may be called to serve if one of the original 19 grand jurors cannot continue to serve.
  5. San Mateo Civil Grand Jurors serve from July 1 - June 31.

Three Challenging Questions

When you receive your application applying for civil grand jury duty, you will be required to answer a battery of questions. The three most challenging questions are listed below.

  1. What particular experience would you contribute to the grand jury?
  2. Why do you wish to serve on the grand jury?
  3. Why should you be selected to serve on the grand jury?

Citizens living in other counties, other than San Mateo County, are advised to phone your county Hall of Justice and inquire what steps should be taken to be considered for civil grand jury service.
