Before you Consider Applying for Grand Jury Duty


Citizens interested to serve one year on the County Civil Grand Jury in California, must seriously consider the following expectations necessary to address the responsibilities required of responsible grand jurors:

  • Reading, writing and comprehension skills
  • Ability to analyze investigated data
  • Willingness to ask direct or embarrassing questions of subjects of an investigation
  • Grammar and sentence structure skills to prepare numerous reports
  • Previous experiences in Committee, Civic or Volunteer Organizations
  • Devote one full year of uninterrupted service
  • Complete absence of bias, prejudice and hidden agendas
  • A minimum of 50 hours of work a month devoted to sundry responsibilities:
    1) Serving on at least two committees  2) Preparing investigative questions
    3) Visiting sundry cities in your county  4) Visiting County jails  5) Reading grand jury manuals, reports and sundry documents  6) Writing final reports
    7) Researching, gathering and compiling data  8) Analyzing the validity of letters of complaint  9) Taking copious notes  10) Planning agendas for committee meetings

    1. The person is serving as a trial juror in any court of this state.
    2. The person has been discharged as a grand juror in any court of the state within one year.
    3. The person has been convicted of malfeasance in office or any felony or other high crime.
    4. The person is serving as an elected public officer.
